“Farm To Table” & The Hospitality Industry


For as much as the hospitality industry may have capitalized on the slogan “Farm to Table” it is unlikely that the industry will deprive guests of their expectations by not offering certain foods just because they are not available locally. We would not expect them to either!

To depend on a large variety of local farmers to reliably supply the hotels, resorts, inns… with their needed produce would require a level of organization and likely a middle man or woman which would drive cost to high. It is more likely that the term “Organically Grown Produce” can be used reliably and economically as the supplier pool is much better organized and variety is more available.

Before You Decide On “farm To Table” consider this

Organic farming is not just about avoiding chemicals (as most believe), it is also about knowing what to grow where and when. Some produce will just not grow well in certain areas where the soil and environment is not conducive to certain types of healthy plant growth. It is a well known fact that some vegetables can be sweeter in Alaska than, let say, Texas. You can “Farm To Table Organic Plant” all you want, the hospitality industry still has to deal with their local environment which will yield different results or no results at all (on certain produce) from local farmers. Aside from many other factors, farming in your area can simply be affected by:

  • Light quantity which refers to the intensity or concentration of sunlight. It varies season to season and throughout the year.
  • Light duration or photoperiod which refers to the amount of time that a plant is exposed to sunlight.
  • Light quality which refers to the color or wavelength reaching the plant surface. Sunlight can be broken up by a prism into respective colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
  • Temperature will affect productivity and plant growth. Plant variety, warm-season or cool-season crop, will also be affected differently by temperature..

A Possible Solution

If hotels, resorts, inns… are willing to depend on a nationwide supply of organic produce, to supplement reliable local farms, then the possibilities can be virtually endless. The supply can be more dependable and cost greatly diminished. This will allow your guests to experience the beauty of organic farming. Don’t be surprise if you hear a lot of “this is delicious” or “where did they get these veggies?” from your guests as they get to taste the real thing. Or you can always go conventional and get what you expect – blend, even, tasteless (or fake taste) results.

And as far as the next slogan that will be used by the hospitality industry, it is already here and it’s called “Experience Our Locally Grown Organic Foods”. If you still want to use “Farm To Table”, well, maybe that is a niche that can be exploited.

What does this have to do with promotional products? Nothing, really! Just wanted to share ideas that will hopefully, help! Your business grow! Or wait, you can always have us print a sign, a plate, a glass, a gift… with your organic slogan! We wish you great success!
